It's All About HYMN combines the counsel of Scripture; the wisdom in voices of
contemporary authorities and those from ages past; widely accepted criteria for
church music aesthetics; the power of logic and reason to repel fallacy,
groupthink, and false justifications; and how art and architecture work in
tandem to create the spaces that determine how we worship.

Regardless of which side of the worship music debate you find yourself, enrich
and deepen your perception of the importance of spiritual discernment as a filter
through which all music finds its way into hallowed spaces by a careful study of
this book.
"CHURCH MUSIC LEADERS in the 21st century face a unique challenge as we respond to technology,
paradigm shifts in society, relevance, and how best to preserve the church's rich heritage of music and
liturgy for future generations. Donn LeVie, Jr. offers articulate, insightful, and diverse essays framed
from his varied experience as a church musician of many years. It provokes concerns that all leaders
in the contemporary Christian church share. Let the dialogue continue!"

Director of Music Ministries, Christ the King Lutheran Church, Norcross, Georgia

"THROUGH THE VARIED chapters of this collection runs an admirable commitment to the importance of congregational song in the formation and
expression of Christian faith and practice. The warnings to worship planners and musicians concerning the trap of choosing music merely by
personal preference (regardless of whether it is classical or rock or anything else) are especially noteworthy."

"
AS A FORMER praise team member, Donn presents compelling reasons for a better way of selecting music for worship. That better way is the
topic of
It's All About HYMN. The reader will find in the overarching themes of this book the heart of a church musician who fervently desires
that the church rethink its present musical direction."

It's All About Hymn: Essays on Reclaiming Sacred and Traditional Music for Worship
is a look at how traditional music has fallen into secular culture, and how modern religious leaders can reclaim it for worship purposes to enhance
the faith of their congregations....
It's All About Hymn is a must for those who embrace traditional worship music and their faith equally, and

A great book on music for worship, highly recommended
Allen C., Austin, Texas (Read the full 5-star review at Amazon.com)
"It's All About Hymn is a highly thought provoking work by Donn Levie about music in church, a real eye opener on the topic. This is a must read
for every worship leader, music ministry leader, choir director, pastor, and church band member … especially if the church has a praise band; it
would also serve every church member well to gain insight into the music of the church... I highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to
learn and understand more about church music, why it is the way it is and how it should be."

One of the best books on the subject of selecting appropriate music for worship
Jessie Douglass, from Author's Den (read the full review at www.authorsden.com)
"I had some initial concern that this book might be one of those emotionally charged offerings that provides little insight into the factors that
influence worship music choices. But that concern dissipated after I read the back cover quotes and inside quotes from such notable church music
authorities as Drs. Westermeyer, Johansson, Daw, and Music. . . All too often, positions on the subject reflect personal preferences that are many
times the result of the selective filtering of facts (or no facts at all), history, emotions, and Scripture, and LeVie does an admirable job of highlighting
this problem and pointing to a path around it. . .
It’s All About HYMN is a highly recommended read for anyone involved with planning, presenting,
participating and leading traditional or contemporary worship music for congregation participation. The many questions posed throughout this book
serve as great checkpoints to help ensure your selections reflect biblical guidance and spiritual discernment, and possess an appropriate aesthetic
for church music."

Finally, a sound scriptural prescription for settling the worship music debate
Brian Metzger, Christian Worship Book Review (Read the full review at www.authorsden.com)
"When it comes to books on the church music controversy, It’s All About HYMN is hands-down one of the more considerate ones but a read that
challenges proponents of CCM to face up to the shortcomings of that genre of music for use in worship. Each chapter is peppered with both
rhetorical and thought-provoking questions that need to be addressed by those in charge of presenting music for worship and those who participate
in its offering. LeVie claims not to be an academician or biblical scholar, but his writing reveals not only knowledge and application of Scripture, but
well-reasoned assertions, proposals, and conclusions drawn from his research, which is well annotated at the end of each chapter. . . Besides
offering convincing and supported arguments, LeVie interjects questions that demand serious thought for nearly every claim, opinion, and
perspective that promotes the use of CCM or “Christian Pop Music” for worship services. If you want an eye-opening perspective on this hotly
contested issue that gently but firmly leads you through the false presumptions, fallacies, and half-truths that often characterize the worship music
debate,
It's All About HYMN is THE book that will do it."

It's All About Hymn has opened my eyes!
S. Thomas (Read the full 5-star review at www.amazon.com)
"I have gained tremendous insight from reading It's All About HYMN and now look at church worship music with a whole new understanding.
Where in the past I looked at the music as my entertainment or the warm up to the real worship, I now know how flawed my thinking was. The
author explained that I am not the audience, but as part of the congregation, I am the praise band! He really made me think by asking me to ponder
and consider what I am really singing along to and what meaning or significance or effect it has. After reading this book, I no longer feel like an
outsider sitting in the pews during the music service, but a participant in the worship of God and now I carefully consider the words that we as a
church are singing."

An Excellent Surprise and a Must Read
Zman (From the 5-star review at Amazon.com)
"I thought this was going to be another one of those books that was just trying to "push" Donn LeVie's personal preferences, but I thought I would
give it a try anyway. I am so glad I did. Mr. LeVie really took a well rounded and Biblically based approach to the subject and presented the material
in a way that made sense. In a world that continues down the path of "whatever", this book is a real wakeup call. Before I read this, I was a
personal fan of Contemporary Christian music and didn't see what the big deal was. After reading this book, I began to actually pay attention and
listen to the actual lyrics and music. In doing so, I have realized just how spiritually shallow a lot of Contemporary Christian music really is. The
Gospel is missing from a lot of it. Excellent book that should be read by all Pastors, Staff and Music Directors."

Christian Review of Books Book Review
(www.christianreviewofbooks.com)
"[It's All About HYMN] focuses on the view that the hymns we sing in church should be about bringing honor to the Lord and not bringing attention
to ourselves.

The book contains 12 different essays relating to different subjects regarding music in the church. One essay titled "The Worship Issue Throughout
the Ages" expounds on how worship music has changed over the centuries. It explains, using scripture to back up what is stated, that music is about
honoring the Lord and not about how it makes us feel. The author shows how throughout history music has changed to meet the needs of the
singers instead of keeping the focus on the Savior.

In an essay titled "Does Secular Music Have a Place in Worship Services?", the author explains that we should not mix the world’s music and rhythms
with music that is to honor the One who made us. He states that we are to be separate from the world and its views and our music should be
another way we express that separation.

Although this can be a controversial subject, the author does an excellent job of explaining his view of the topic without coming across as arrogant
or condescending. This is not a book you can
read quickly but if you do take the time to delve into the subject matter you will enjoy the insights of
this well educated author."

Informative and Enjoyable
James Durney (Amazon Top 500 Reviewer; from the 5-star review at Amazon.com)
"
This is a book of essays on religious music, its history, use and considerations of the different types of church music. The author is involved and has
definite ideas on music in church. His faith, his passion and commitment are very visible as we read these essays. This is a very good thing adding to
the author's arguments and making them much more convincing. Each essay addresses a facet of religious music. The author is careful to explain
each term but never talks down to the reader. This reminded me of a very good teacher, taking the time to ensure that every student had the basic
understanding needed to proceed.

"This book works on several levels. It is an examination of the use and form of music in church. It is a challenge to those involved in "the worship
music debate" to think about the music they support and it is a history of religious music. These well-written, thought provoking essays "offer a
gentle but firm treatment "of the subject. This book works for those that have a passing interest to those heavily involved. They can be read
individually or as a complete set and are equally enjoyable either way.
